June 2012 Round-Up

Saturday, June 30, 2012

June was so busy! I had my birthday, my parents came to town, and I got my new camera (for said birthday)! I've been playing around with it so much, and I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I really want to sign up for a class (I've been looking at Bellapop's) and really get some experience under my belt! Photography's even more fun when you can shoot in manual!

On the Road Again

Friday, June 29, 2012

Hi Friends! TGIF.

I'm so glad it's the weekend. I wish I could sleep, but I'm heading off to New York for the weekend. I can't wait to explore places I haven't been yet! And it will be cooler there than here. Marginally. At least there's shade because of all the tall buildings and we will be able to find air conditioned places somewhere. Hoorah!
Yesterday, I compared this outfit to an ice cream cone whilst talking to A. Brownish bottom, bloused white top. I see it, don't you? Also, I wore heels for the third time this week. Winning? Or maybe just getting over my OCD about being 8 inches taller than everyone around me...
Bonus awkward shot, because I think I'm the queen of awkward outfit photos. For some reason, I find it way harder to look happy and not like a mannequin when I am taking pictures of myself. At least with someone else taking the pictures, I can interact with them! (Nicole, if you are reading this, you are my photographer this weekend for this reason).

3 Fourth of July-Ready Outfits

Thursday, June 28, 2012

It's almost the 4th of July! Whether you're celebrating Wednesday, or this weekend, the holiday always promises to be a great time. Cookouts, beach parties, fireworks(!) - or if you're lucky like we were as kids, all three - it's always fun (unless it's raining).

Another thing that's great about the 4th, is that it's easy to dress for - throw on some red, white, and blue (yes that's cliche, whatever) and you're good to go!

Happy 4th of July!

That Time I Forgot About Focusing and Shadows

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

This outfit was so cute and summery and my pictures came out looking like this. oops. Well, photography is a learning process, right? Next time, I'll remember that when you stand with something between you and the sun, there will be a shadow. On you.
Anyway, it's going to be hot as balls again starting today (hopefully not because I'm wearing pants) and continuing on through the weekend. At least I'll be in New York this weekend visiting my friend N., so it will be 5 degrees cooler. But we're going to the High Line! I can't wait.

While I am definitely guilty of spending more than my fair share of money at clothing store chains, I really enjoy supporting smaller businesses too. Not only do you find more unique, personal clothing (anyone else every get to an event and then realize there are 4 people wearing your dress?) but you're supporting a small business! Always good.

I am always at a loss to find small clothing boutiques and stores, however, particularly when they aren't local.  So, I was really pleased to discover Miinto. Haven't heard of it? Well, Miinto is an online fashion shop that brings together a variety of independent shops and boutiques in one curated, online space. Started in 2009 in Copenhagen by two Danish entrepreneurs, Miinto has since spread to the United States and parts of Europe, and is focused on high quality fashion and accessories for men, women, and children (you can read more about their background here).

The site is really great. It brings together a variety of clothes, accessories, jewelry, and shoes !  Check it out! And what's more, if you like both MCAM and Miinto on Facebook, you can get a $15 giftcard to spend on Miinto!

Road Trip!

Friday, June 22, 2012

By the time you read this, I'll be on the road to Massachusetts with A.! We're off for the weekend, me to my house for my cousin's bridal shower and A. to her grandparent's for a cousin's graduation party. Good times! I've never driven from DC to MA before, so this should be very interesting!
In other news, it has been a couple of scorchers here in DC. So gross. Walking anywhere outside for more than 2 minutes leaves you sweaty and nasty. Blech.  But, the heat meant I dug out this dress! It's so old that I don't entirely remember when I bought it. And despite being 3-4 sizes larger than I am now, it still mostly fits. I'm not sure if that's because I've washed it so much it has shrunk, or if that is a sign of just how bad vanity sizing has gotten. Either way, I'm glad I found it again!
See you on the flipside!

To Market, To Market

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Sunday, A. and I met one of her coworkers at Eastern Market. It is seriously one of my favorite places in DC and I am sad I don't get there that frequently anymore. When I lived down the street, I was there every weekend! While the list of things I miss about living on the Hill is relatively small, this is definitely at the top!

Remote Control

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

The remote control is here! Which means taking outfit photos is now way more fun and interesting. I just wish the alley behind my house were less ugly/filled with DC trash bins/clean/etc. But I am outside! Welcome to my parking pad and my ugly back steps.
I'm really depressed at the moment because, for the last month or so, we've had rather gaw-jus weather. Except it has gone out the window with the birds. Waiting for the bus this morning was so disgusting and it's going to get up to 95 105+ with the heat index. Oh the horror! So I'll be re-breaking out all my skirts and and dresses! Hooray!

My First Birchbox!

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

I'm slightly late to the game, but I finally caved and signed up for Birchbox about a month ago, and my first box arrived over the weekend! I've been waiting impatiently, especially after seeing some pictures floating around on Twitter of this month's box. I'm pleased to say I wasn't totally disappointed!
This month's box was summer travel-themed, so all the things were geared towards prepping yourself for a vacation. Even though I don't have any vacations planned, I'm more than happy using what I got for everyday purposes.
Upon opening the box, the first thing i saw was this leopard thing. I was really confused until I got it out and saw that it was a cute bag for carrying liquids through airport security! I'm always losing my liquids bag, so I was really excited to have received this one. Also, it's pink. leopard. I can't wait to fly so I can use it!
Then I unwrapped the rest of the box and got my first look at the goods!
Included were self-tanning towlettes (tried that, failed, now my leg looks a little...odd in places... but they DID tan).
Makeup brush and sponge cleaner was in the box. I haven't tried it yet, but I am excited to. I am so bad about cleaning my brushes.
This de-frizzing hair product, by Number 4, smells really weird, but so far I think it actually does what it says. It'll be put to the real test during the rest of this week, when it is over 100 and humid (...yay dc...). It also has sun protecting qualities!
I had seen from Twitter, that people were receiving theBalm's Staniac in their boxes and I was hoping I'd get it too. I'm always on the lookout for new lip products (as we've discussed before) and one that doubles as a cheek stain, too? Perfect! I love the color, it's just red enough to be seen, but not so bad that it screams RED.
Finally, Birchbox is currently promoting Birchbox Man, which is in it's beta period. They included a little eau de cologne packet. I'll be passing this on to my brother to see what he thinks!

Overall, I'm pleased with the box. I wish there were more makeup products instead of tanning things (then I wouldn't have a streaky leg..), but it is summer, and we all know that you shouldn't be tanning in the sun because it's bad for your skin! I'm excited to see what next month's box brings!

Do you subscribe to Birchbox? What have you gotten in it so far?

Golden Summers

Monday, June 18, 2012

Something strange has happened. For the first time in my adult life, I'm craving gold jewelry. I never want gold jewelry. In fact, I think that until recently I had less than 5 pieces that were gold (real or otherwise). But that is slowly (ok maybe rapidly?) changing!
Gold Jewelry Crush

However, I've recently decided that it does have it's place, particularly in the summer. It's just so much warmer than silver, looks great with the bright colors that are popping up everywhere this year, and is great with a tan! Add in the proliferation of nautical-themed pieces - which I am, admittedly, obsessed with - and you've got a summer accessory smorgasbord!
*runs out and buys every piece of gold jewelry she can get her hands on*

Which do you prefer - gold or silver?

Friday Favorites

Friday, June 15, 2012

I've been on a learn-to-photograph/use your camera kick since the arrival of my new DSLR. I spent hours yesterday finding great resources to learn and read! Here are just a few of my favorites that I've pinned to Pinterest:
